NEW Writing Publishable Qualitative Manuscripts: Principles and Practices
Qualitative scholar conversation with

Leslie Curry and Kristin Black

July 31-August 1

This session addresses principles and practices for writing a rigorous, compelling qualitative manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. The workshop unfolds in four modules across the two days as we work iteratively through core principles and practices, draw on examples from peer-reviewed literature, and engage in hands-on exercises in small and large groups.

  • Module 1 opens with helping researchers think prospectively and strategically about potential complementary publications using a tool we call the “publication plan” to manage the authorship team and writing process. Because writing can begin early in the process, we explore the value of memoing and diagramming, as well as techniques for these practices.
  • In modules 2 and 3, we dive deep into the writing process, working on both content and style considerations. We will present examples and exercises to develop critical appraisal skills and practice effective techniques.
  • Module 4 addresses common challenges in the manuscript review process and strategies for responding to reviewer critiques.

The workshop format will be interactive, with opportunity for spontaneous discussion and collaboration among participants to share experiences and tools they may have developed in writing of qualitative manuscripts. We will co-create a library of resources based on questions and requests that arise over the course of the workshop. By the end of this two-day session, you will be equipped with information, resources, and templates to strengthen your qualitative manuscript writing and submission process.
