The life of the qualitative analysis process using the Sort and Sift approach

Experience the Sort and Sift approach as an iterative process where analysts dive into data to understand its content, dimensions and properties, and then step back to assess what they have learned and to determine next steps.

The method is guided by two sets of analytic tools:

Diving In Tools – used as you process initial data documents

  • The importance of starting with quotations and key data segments
  • The role of visual diagramming in rethinking how ideas combine to help you find and tell your story
  • Using memos to write for discovery
  • Creating and comparing episode profiles to privilege the whole story of  each data document
  • Using categorization and coding as a means of topic discovery and monitoring

Stepping Back Tools – fluid movement toward products (reports, presentations, articles, books, etc.) using the Sort and Sift advanced analytic tools

  • Mining
  • Story Evolution Tool
  • Concept Combination Tool

Event organization and flow

  • Our mentors will co-teach the Sort and Sift approach via open lecture/discussion format.
  • Day 1 begins with overview and introduction.
  • As the camp progresses we will enrich student understanding of these topics according to learning that emerges throughout the event.
  • The schedule will be structured to facilitate independent work periods when participants apply course content to their data.
  • The schedule is necessarily flexible as it will be built according to the skill level and priority needs of attendees.


Data Use:

  • We strongly advise that you work with your own data.
    • Participants will benefit from applying points of learning and advice directly to their own data.
    • At minimum, we advise that you have 3 – 5 qualitative data collection pieces available for you to engage at the camp. We do not expect or require you to have all data collected.
  • If you do not currently have an available dataset, ResearchTalk can provide data for you to work with during the camp.

Qualitative Software:

  • You are welcomed, but not required, to use qualitative software during the data analysis camp
    • If you use software at the camp, you will be expected to have a licensed or demo version of the software package of your choice loaded on your computer.
    • It is expected that you have basic competence with the qualitative software program of your choice. Basic competence includes skill in data import and management, code creation, application and retrieval, memo-writing skills, diagramming and question and answer functions (e.g. filtering, co-occurrence).

  • After registration you will receive a participant survey that asks for detail on your current work and the qualitative data you will use at the camp.
  • We will ask you to send sample data for our review. Note that we assume confidentiality in this process. If you require, we will sign confidentiality agreements you provide.
  • We will send you a brief list of suggested analysis goals to achieve before the camp.
  • ResearchTalk will send a detailed information sheet detailing where you need to be when.
